An RV water heater is not necessarily a direct replacement just because its exterior door looks similar. Before ordering, compare the actual wall cutout, available installation depth, LPG supply, water connections, 12V/24V DC power and exhaust arrangement. The existing heater model number and installation photos should be reviewed together with a controlled drawing for the proposed replacement.

Can a tankless RV water heater replace a 6-gallon tank model?

Sometimes, but it should not be assumed to be a direct drop-in replacement. A tank model and a tankless model may use different wall openings, appliance depths, exterior flanges, gas and water connection positions, wiring and exhaust arrangements.

A replacement plan should compare the old appliance label and model, the structural opening, the available space behind the wall and clear photos of every interface. An adapter frame or installation modification may be required even when the outside doors appear similar.

1. Measure the wall cutout—not only the outside door

The exterior door or service panel normally overlaps the vehicle wall, so its nominal size is not the same as the structural opening. Remove or open the old service door as appropriate and record the clear opening width and height, corner geometry, wall thickness, flange coverage and screw pattern.

Also inspect the condition of the surrounding wall. Corrosion, water ingress or damaged framing should be repaired before the new gas appliance is fitted.

  • Clear wall opening: width × height
  • Exterior flange coverage and screw locations
  • Wall thickness, framing and sealing surface
  • Any adapter frame required to cover the previous opening

2. Confirm installation depth and service access

Measure from the exterior wall surface to the first obstruction inside the vehicle. Allow for the appliance body, hoses, wiring bends, gas connection, drain or pressure-relief arrangements and access needed for inspection or servicing.

Do not approve a replacement from front-view dimensions alone. Use a controlled installation drawing showing the full appliance envelope and all connection positions.

3. Match the LPG supply and exhaust system

Confirm the fuel family, regulator outlet pressure, pipe or hose connection and the applicable destination-market installation requirements. The Joelwave RVW-LP09-01 project shown here is an LPG configuration. LPG and natural-gas versions should be treated as separately engineered combustion systems unless a released specification explicitly states otherwise.

The exterior exhaust outlet, combustion-air path, clearances and sealing arrangement must remain unobstructed. Installation and gas work should be completed and checked by appropriately qualified personnel under the rules applicable to the vehicle and market.

4. Compare water connections and hydraulic conditions

Record the cold-water inlet and hot-water outlet positions, thread or fitting type, hose route, available pump pressure and winterization or drain arrangement. An adapter may be possible, but unsupported hose bends, inaccessible fittings and stress on the appliance connections should be avoided.

The proposed heater's specified operating range must be compared with the vehicle pump and plumbing system. A similar advertised flow rate does not prove compatibility under the vehicle's real inlet-water temperature and pressure.

5. Verify the 12V/24V DC circuit and controller

Confirm whether the vehicle uses 12V or 24V DC, plus current capacity, fuse or protective device, polarity, connector, conductor length and controller-cable route. The RVW-LP09-01 platform supports 12V/24V DC with a 5A vehicle-side supply; the exact project voltage must be specified on the approved rating label and wiring documentation.

The controller mounting position should be dry, visible and convenient for the user. Cable extensions or connector substitutions require approval rather than assumption.

6. Send a complete replacement-fitment request

For a preliminary compatibility review, send the information below in one message. It allows the supplier to compare the existing installation with the proposed sample before a quotation or vehicle modification is approved.

  • Old water-heater brand, model and rating-label photo
  • Exterior door size and actual wall-cutout size
  • Available installation depth and wall-thickness measurement
  • Front, rear, side, water, gas, wiring and exhaust photos
  • LPG supply pressure and connection type
  • Vehicle DC voltage and available circuit capacity
  • Vehicle type, destination market, expected quantity and certification requirement

Buyer questions

Can an RV tankless water heater directly replace a 6-gallon tank heater?

It may be possible, but it is not automatically a direct replacement. Compare the actual wall cutout, depth, flange coverage, gas and water interfaces, 12V/24V circuit and exhaust arrangement. An adapter frame or installation changes may be required.

Is the outside access-door size the same as the wall cutout?

Usually not. The door or mounting flange normally overlaps the vehicle wall. Measure the clear structural opening separately and confirm that the new flange covers and seals the previous opening.

Can an LPG RV water heater be converted to natural gas?

Do not assume that a nozzle change is sufficient. Gas pressure, burner, gas-control components, combustion settings, rating label and certification may differ. Use a separately approved configuration.

Can the same heater operate on both 12V and 24V?

The RVW-LP09-01 platform supports 12V/24V DC with a 5A vehicle-side supply. Confirm the vehicle voltage, connector, protection and released rating label for the ordered configuration.

What should I send before requesting a sample?

Send the old model and rating label, cutout and depth measurements, installation photos, LPG pressure, water and gas connection details, DC supply information, vehicle type, destination market, quantity and certification requirements.
